Field Notes

Film photography, long walks, and the occasional detour.

The last warm Sunday

October 19, 2026

It was the kind of day October gives you once and then takes back. Fourteen degrees, no wind, and more birch leaves on the ground than on the trees. I took the long way around the lake with one roll of colour film and finished it before lunch. The forecast says sleet tomorrow, so this roll will have to carry the whole autumn.

Three days along the lake shore

September 28

The forecast promised rain and delivered fog instead, which turned out to be a gift. Two rolls of Portra, one of HP5, and a lot of patience waiting for the light to break through the pines in the early morning.

Developing black and white at home: what I got wrong

August 14

My first five rolls came out thin and grey. The culprit was water temperature, not the developer. A cheap aquarium thermometer fixed more than any new chemistry ever did.

A short note on carrying less

July 2

One body, one 50 mm lens, a notebook. Every time I pack more, I photograph less. This summer I tried to stick to that rule and the results were better for it.

About

I'm Alex. I keep this journal mostly for myself: routes worth repeating, film stocks worth buying again, and mistakes worth not repeating.

Gear

A well-used 35 mm rangefinder, a light tripod, and boots that have seen better days.
